Werner Heinz
Independent researcher
Profile
Werner Heinz started his work on Roman baths with his thesis about “Römische Bäder in Baden-Württemberg” (1979). He has published widely on the subject, including the monograph Römische Thermen. Badewesen und Badeluxus im Römischen Reich (Hirmer Verlag, 1984). His research on the Roman spa of Badenweiler (Southern Germany) resulted in a completely new view on the history of its architecture and use of the building. The final publication of the results is forthcoming.

Hubertus Manderscheid
Independent researcher
Profile
Hubertus Manderscheid is an independent scholar of Classical Archaeology. In 1977 he received his PhD from the University of Cologne, followed by a ‘Reisestipendium’ of the German Archaeological Institute to travel for a year in the Mediterranean area. Since 1978 he lives in/near Rome. His main fields of research are the architecture, the decoration, and the water and heating technologies of ancient bath buildings, as well as Roman ‘water archaeology’ and, finally, the history of Classical Studies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (he published seven monographs and more than seventy articles, book chapters and conference papers). His recent publication (2020) deals with the water management of the Roman town of Minturnae (Latium). His current project on the ‘Heated rooms in non-bathing contexts in Roman houses, villas and residences in Rome and Latium’, together with the Austrian expert of ancient heating systems, Hannes Lehar, is forthcoming. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, and in 2018 he received the medal of the Frontinus Gesellschaft.
