You can help us contribute to the database in two ways:
- You could take charge of data entry for a whole site or an entire region, using published material and/or material from your own research. For this, we would train you in the use of the OCHRE platform so that you can enter the data directly in the database. Contact us to discuss this.
- You could instead fill in an entry for a single site, if you have a specific connection to or knowledge of that site. We have prepared a simple form (see below) to input the data; filling it should be straightforward, but contact us should you want more guidance or to ensure the building has not been recorded already.
Data initially recorded
In this first phase of the database, our aim is to record minimal information for a large number of bath buildings, including baths known only through epigraphical or literary sources.
The information include:
- Site name (modern and ancient)
- Country
- Location (latitude and longitude) and precision of the information
- Nature of the evidence for the building (archaeological, epigraphical, literary etc.)
- Name(s) of the building
- Reliability of the identification
- Category(ies) of the building (domestic, public, sanctuary etc.)
- Context of the building (city, small settlement, countryside etc.)
- Dating
- Size
- Current accessibility, ancient state of preservation, scope of investigation and publication
- Bibliography, plans and images
- Optionally: longer descriptions of the phasing of the structure, the plans and rooms, the construction techniques, the heating systems and water management, the decoration and the epigraphical material.
Form for data entry for a single site

The form is organised as follows:
