Latin term to denote a shop, a shed or a booth. Tabernae were sometimes built against the outer walls of the palaestra and consisted of one or two rooms open to the street. The tabernae around baths could sell food, beverages and possibly bath-related items such as oil and nitrum (salt scrub).
