The proceedings of the international conference ‘Roman Baths and Agency. The Human Factor in Designing, Building, Using, Experiencing, and Maintaining
Bath Buildings in the Roman Territories‘, held at the Academia Belgica in Rome on 18-20 October 2023, have just been published by Peeters as BABesch Supplement 51.
Through its 26 contributions organised around six themes, this volume seeks to restore the human element into the study of bath buildings. From the architects who designed baths to the bathers who made use of them, from the commissioners who funded their construction to the enslaved people working in the praefurnia, no effort was spared to propose a novel perspective of these ubiquitous buildings, highlighting the human practices and choices that shaped the experience of bathing in the Roman world.
Our gratitude goes to Beatrice de Fraiture for her tireless help throughout the many iterations of the editing process.
