Balnearia archive

Balnearia finds an online home

From 1993 to 1997, the International Association for the Study of Ancient Baths (IASAB), presided by Inge Nielsen, published the Balnearia series, a newsletter edited by Janet DeLaine and dedicated to matters relating to ancient baths. On top of longer articles, regular contents included a ‘notes and news’ section to highlight recent discoveries, the results of ongoing projects, or announce and review relevant conferences; a bibliography on baths curated by Hubertus Manderscheid; and a ‘Help!!!’ section for scholars puzzled by bathing-related material to ask the community for help.

This archive—the visible end of an initiative that was not dissimilar from the BATH network—was so far available only in a limited number of libraries. With the blessing of their initiators Inge and Janet, we are making the contents of the entire series available for download here.

Our thanks to Hubertus Manderscheid for providing us with scans of the Balnearia issues!
