Database (in progress)

If you would like to help us fill this database, click here!

The most significant ongoing project of the BATH network is the creation of a database of all bath buildings of the Roman world, be they domestic, municipal, military, or attached to waystations or sanctuaries (the only exception are thermomineral baths, already taken care of by a different project). In time this database will expand to include the baths of the Greek and Islamic worlds.

The database will be built using the platform OCHRE (Online Cultural and Historical Research Environment), developed by Sandra Schloen and Miller Prosser, and hosted by the University of Chicago; they have kindly agreed to let us use their software and to host the BATH database on their servers.

The database is currently under construction. We have created the template for data entry of individual baths (presented here), and are now at the data entry stage. The database will not be consultable before several months, but we will post updates on our progress on this page.

Considering the sheer number of baths in the Roman world, this database can only be a team effort. If you are motivated in helping us enter data, please contact us! And if you are a scholar excavating or studying a single bath building and would like to create an entry for this structure, you can do so too—more information here.

Database progress

As of May 2024, the database covers the Roman to Early Islamic baths of Iudaea/Syria-Palaestina and Provincia Arabia, from Arleta Kowalewska’s thesis.
